Ontario Premier Doug Ford lashed out at Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) executives last week after a report by CBC News revealed they are eligible to receive bonuses this year, despite an expected loss of more than $200 million in revenue and layoffs of casino workers.
According to a first-quarter financial report from the province last week, revenues are expected to be on the downturn at OLG from $809 million to $600 million.
Ford says that in speaking with OLG Chair Peter M. Deeb Friday, he was informed that OLG could potentially trigger lawsuits by clawing back the bonus payments.
“They should’ve sat around the table, in my opinion, and thought this out,” Ford told reporters Friday. “I know there’s legal ramifications – they checked with finance, they checked with legal and they said, ‘Well, this is for last year’s bonuses before COVID came into place'.”
“But again, the perception, the reality out there, you nailed it. There’s 15,000 people out of work, and the big-wigs are getting a bonus. You got to think these things out, guys. You got to be sitting around the table and think, is this prudent to do this? And I understand the legal ramifications. I was told, yeah, the lawsuits would be flying everywhere. Well, save it – maybe this year, they should forgo a bonus. They’re making big bucks.”
Ford says he intends to “dig into this deeper,” and wants to follow up with Deeb and Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips, who oversees OLG.
“It’s just not good. It is not good at all. People are struggling out there, people at the casinos,” he said.
Ford has lashed out at OLG executives, characterizing them as ‘fat cats.’ According to The Sunshine List, more than 400 OLG employees made more than $100,000 in 2019, with departing chief executive officer Stephen Rigby topping the list with a salary worth more than $765,000 annually.
“Guys, think before you start giving out all these bonuses. Like, give me a break,” he said. “Sometimes they just don’t think. For all these big smart guys, they aren’t too friggin’ smart.”
